A short guide for the upcoming season

Boating season is right around the corner, and one of the most important components to check before launching your boat is the propeller. The propeller is the only link between the engine and the water – even minor nicks or a wrong-pitch prop can drastically reduce engine performance and increase fuel consumption.

But what to do when the old propeller needs replacing? How do you navigate the maze of materials and numbers? Here’s a short guide to help you make the right choice.

1. Aluminium vs. Stainless Steel

The first question is usually material choice. Both have clear pros and cons.

Aluminium propellers: The most common and affordable choice for recreational boaters. Aluminium is a relatively soft metal — a big advantage in our rocky and shallow coastal waters. If you hit an underwater rock, the aluminium prop will give way and break, protecting the engine’s costly gearbox (lower unit) from major damage.

Stainless steel propellers: Far stronger and stiffer. Since steel doesn’t flex under heavy load, it delivers better acceleration, higher top speed, and lower fuel consumption. However, they’re more expensive, and hitting a rock risks transferring the impact to the engine shaft and gears.

2. What Do the Numbers on a Propeller Mean? (Pitch and Diameter)

Every propeller has two main parameters, e.g. 13 x 19. The first number is the diameter (in inches) and the second is the pitch (in inches).

Diameter: The width of the prop from one blade tip to the other. Larger and heavier boats need bigger diameter props to push water more efficiently.

Pitch: The theoretical distance the propeller travels in one full revolution (like screwing into wood).

Smaller pitch (e.g. 15″) = Better acceleration and pulling power. Ideal for towing water skiers or a heavily loaded boat.

Larger pitch (e.g. 21″) = Higher top speed but slower acceleration. Suits light and fast boats.

Golden rule: If your engine doesn’t reach the manufacturer’s maximum RPM at full throttle, try a lower-pitch prop. If the engine over-revs, you need a higher-pitch prop.

3. A Smart Solution: Rubex Interchangeable Hub Propellers

If you’re tired of buying a brand new propeller after every minor bump, consider the Rubex interchangeable hub system.

With this system, the propeller blades and the hub are separate components. When you hit a rock, usually only the inexpensive rubber hub breaks, protecting the engine. The propeller itself may remain intact, and you only need to replace the hub for a few dozen euros. Paadiosad.ee carries Rubex systems for both aluminium and stainless steel variants, compatible with almost all major engine brands (Yamaha, Suzuki, Honda, Mercury, etc.).

Spring Check: Is Your Propeller Ready to Go?

Before launching your boat, do a quick visual inspection of your propeller:

Are there any cracks, deep nicks, or bent blades?

Remove the propeller briefly and check that no old fishing line is wound around the shaft — this can damage the shaft seal and let water into the gearbox.

Always grease the propeller shaft with a special waterproof marine grease before reinstalling the prop.

Boating season is right around the corner, and one of the most important components to check before launching your boat is the propeller.
